Barcelona, Second Impressions

DAY FIVE & SIX & SEVEN :: 09/28 – 09/30

We started the day early considering how late we got back from clubbing. My overall impression of Barcelona is one of ambivalence, in part because we are hosteling in a “seedier” district where the streets are a bit dirty and there’s this not-so-pleasant smell in the air… but still, the night life is incomparable and there’s really not much else to complain about. Some cities were destined to be and some cities weren’t. I like how the discos all play pretty good music though, something akin to techno/disco/dance-house. After wandering through Barcelona, I am thoroughly amazed at the architecture, especially those of Gaudi’s. We spent the day taking pictures and “Gaudi hunting,” searching the entire city for his work and influence.

We also participated in a multi-hostel pub crawl through Barcelona. A dozen or so folks showed up from our own hostel, including our core group and some periphary friends. The organizer brought us to the first pub where everyone immediately loaded up on all the free beer, sangria, and what not. Revelers from nearby hostels gathered here as well over the hour until we numbered in the 50s. Seeing as how we were on an empty stomach, my sister and I had time to run out and grab a quick tapas run. From there, we hopped over to three more pubs before ending at a night club. Free shots on entrance. It was retarded how much alcohol was consumed, I had something over nine-ten drinks while my sister had about six. It was stupid. We both decided not to go to pubs/nightclubs for the rest of the trip, if not for our livers then at least for our sanity. Absinthe is toxic.

It’s funny how these entries go, I am struggling to catch up with the moments and am progressively losing ground. So much happens everyday that it is impossible to get it all written down, let alone typed up here in the basement bar (free internet here) where the music is loud and the beer flows all too plentiful. All’s well that ends well. I’ll think about it later when there’s time. Anyways, we made it to Madrid and more on that later. Because there is oh-so-much more.
